After being featured on Netflix, there were several La Lupita Merida taquerías that opened up, so make sure you’re headed to the right one in Mercado de Santiago.

After living in Mexico since 2018, I know “these are the best tacos” are fighting words!
I won’t go so far as to say Los Trompos has the best tacos al pastor in Merida, but I will say I used to live in Mexico City, which has the country’s best pastor tacos, and Los Trompos is a solid option.
In case you’re unfamiliar, tacos al pastor are the most popular of all Mexican tacos.
It is pork meat marinated in various spices and cooked on a spit. They are actually a Lebanese-Mexican fusion food, as you may have noticed by the Middle Eastern-style spit the meat is cooked on.

21. El Marlin Azul
El Marlin Azul (The Blue Marlin) is a no-frills place that’s very popular with locals, and as there’s only about five tables, you might encounter a wait.
However, it’s worth it because their fish is fresh, and they serve one of the most unique Merida seafood specialties — ceviche de pulpo frito.
This means “fried octopus ceviche,” and it does use pan-fried octopus instead of uncooked fish, but the same diced veggies and lime juice you’ll find in any Mexican ceviche.
The cooked octopus adds some heat to the veggies and lime juice, which brings out their flavors even more.

IMO, there’s one place that completely dminates the rest when it comes to the best cafes in Merida — Cafe Marago on Paseo Montejo. For the coffee lover (or even, ahem, coffee snob ☕️), there’s just no place better.
They have all the fancy coffee gadgets, like a Chemex, Gem Dripper pour over coffee and Japanese Siphon. The Marago Merida owners have their own roasting plant, so you know the beans are always freshly roasted.
👩💻 ATTN digital nomads in Merida, or anyone who has to get some work done: Marago Cafe is ideal, as they have comfy seating, strong WiFi and air conditioning.
Besides coffee, they have a nice tea selection, as well as smaller plate offerings and sweet treats. Marago has some great breakfast specials, with an egg or pancake dish, plus a cup of coffee, for only about $100 MXN pesos ($5-7 USD).
After their original location on Paseo Montejo got super famous, they ended up opening a second Marago Merida Café in downtown. Both locations are open all day, from 8 am-10 pm.
